I am always trying to eat right and feel good. I am also an individual that enjoys having a drink or two (or four) from time to time. Being super hungover has to be one of the worst feelings ever. Especially now with little ones at home, it is just not something that I can do. Sleeping the day away is not an option. I have to be on my game and ready to tackle the day! What is one to do when they want to go out with friends and have some dranks but still be able to wake the next morning feeling good and ready to be mom?
As I write this I am sipping a glass of wine while everyone else here is asleep. Remeber that?? Sleep?? Who even gets to do that anymore? This picture is making me tired! Anyway, while searching around on Amazon I had come across some hangover capsules that claimed to reduce or eliminate hangovers all together. They were pretty pricey though so I looked into their ingredients and I found that one of the main ingredients was organic milk thistle.
Milk thistle is an herb that has been used for thousands of years to treat certain ailments. Studies suggest that a substance in milk thistle (a flavonoid called silymarin) protects the liver from toxins. This is why I normally take a milk thistle capsule if I am having a couple drinks. Please keep in mind I am not a doctor and you should check with your doctor before taking any herbal supplements! You can read more about the details of milk thistle here. If I drink a good amount of water and take a milk thistle capsule along with some vitamin C I normally wake up hangover free (depending on how much I drank the night before).
While I was up north with my pal Nikki, she introduced me to a whole new approach to avoid a hangover and to help your body feel good in general. This is something she does whenever she feels a little run down and it also just so happens to help with avoiding hangovers. Since we were enjoying wine and sake over the weekend I joined her in this routine and honestly, I felt great.
She made a detox tea using two different teas, one is EveryDay Detox and the other is Roasted Dandelion Root – both by Traditional Medicinals. To the chilled tea she stirred in a scoop of Green Superfood powder, 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract, 1 teaspoon Ashwaghanda Root powder, ¼ teaspoon vitamin C powder, 1 teaspoon of Kudzu, and a full dropper of fenugreek.
I know what you are thinking…this sounds like a lot of work and what the heck are these ingredients?! It took about a minute to mix up and a minute to drink. There are a lot of health benefits that come along with this drink. Let me explain.
If you don’t want to wake up feeling like this guy you may want to drink in moderation, incorporate one or all of these ingredients into your night out, or both.
The Green Superfood powder is a great way to get a boost of vitamins and minerals. If you do not eat a balanced diet everyday (like me) this is a good way to supplement yourself with vegetable servings in a drink form. I ordered the Naturo Sciences Natural Greens to try out. It has great reviews on Amazon so I figured I would give it a whirl. This is a great source of antioxidants, B vitamins, and pre/probiotics among other things.
After some reading about Ashwaghanda root it has made me want to take a little every day! This root has been used in India for thousands of years to support the immune system, promote healthy sleep, sustain energy levels, reduce stress, and support a healthy back and joints. Sign me up!
Grapefruit seed extract is a highly concentrated antioxidant as well as an antimicrobial. I would not recommend taking this every day or for extended periods of time as it can deplete the good gut flora that we all work so hard to build and protect. But if you are feeling a little run down or like you are starting to get sick, this can help you a ton! Follow the directions on the bottle for best results and as always talk to your doctor before taking any supplements. Especially grapefruit seed extract as it can have bad interactions with other medications you may be taking.
Vitamin C is a very powerful and very safe nutrient. It has many health benefits including fighting the common cold, boosting the immune system, healing wounds, maintaining skin elasticity, and even treating cancer! It is a water soluble vitamin and a strong antioxidant.
Kudzo is a vine that apparently grows rapidly in the south. This vine also has a long list of health benefits including reducing or eliminating hangovers! It can reduce the symptoms of headache, upset stomach, dizziness, and vomiting. There are many other uses including fighting the common cold, sinus infections, hay fever and the flu. It definitely does not hurt to add it into this mix. This also has some drug interactions so please talk to your doctor and do some research before you decide to add this to your diet.
Fenugreek helps with digestive problems like upset stomach and inflammation. I don’t know about you but having one too many drinks normally does leave me with an upset stomach the next day.
The ingredients in this mix will help you feel good after a night out. I know it worked for me. Please keep in mind that if you are on any medications or have any known health conditions you should consult your doctor before taking any herbal supplements.
To make this magic potion you start by brewing your Detox and Dandelion tea. You could make a mixture or just use one, it’s totally up to you. Once you have let the tea cool pour about 6-8 ounces in a glass. Stir in the scoop of Green Superfood powder, 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract, 1 teaspoon Ashwaghanda Root powder, ¼ teaspoon vitamin C powder, 1 teaspoon of Kudzu, and a full dropper of fenugreek. Stir it up really well and then chug it down. If you have any left in the cup add some water and then drink that down too.
Now keep in mind that you could mix this up in any way as long as you follow the dosing recomendations on the products themselves. I find that drinking plenty of water, taking a vitamin C capsule and a milk thistle work well. But honestly, both mornings after drinking this mix of Nikki’s I felt great.
